Cover Story
Vector optical fields with a non-uniform polarization distribution show many exotic phenomena and applications. Existing polarization optics, however, mainly focus on the manipulation of polarization distribution on a single transverse plane. Zhang et al. recently proposed a concept of synthetic vector optical fields based on metasurfaces, extending polarization optics from two-dimensional to three-dimensional space. Asymmetric photon spin-orbit interactions are employed to synthesize three-dimensional vector optical fields with spatial and temporal tunability. This cover illustrates an experimental demonstration of longitudinally varied cylindrical vector fields, in which the polarization distribution switches continuously and periodically between radial and azimuthal polarization. Such three-dimensional vector optical fields may alleviate the turbulence and thermal blooming effects of laser during the propagation in the atmosphere, showing potential applications in focal field manipulation, optical force control, laser communication, etc. (See the article (No. 254211) by Fei Zhang et al.).
